DOT Violations/Defect Code 3
Defect Code 3

Improper Slope / Cross-Pitch

NYC sidewalks must pitch ¼" per foot away from the building. Improper or reverse slope traps water and triggers a DOT violation. We re-pour flags to the correct grade so water drains to the curb.

Signs You Have This Violation

  • Standing water on the sidewalk after rain
  • Water running toward your building instead of the curb
  • Cross-slope greater than 2% (ADA limit)
  • Settlement that has reversed the original pitch

Repair Steps

  1. 1
    Survey existing grades
We laser the slope and document deviations from DOT spec.
  2. 2
    Set new forms to spec
Forms set at ¼" per foot pitch toward the curb.
  3. 3
    Pour and screed
Concrete pulled to the new grade and broom-finished.
  4. 4
    Curing and inspection
    Re-inspection confirms compliance with §19-152.

Typical Price Range

Range
600 – 1,400 per flag

Final price depends on access, number of flags, and whether a DOT permit is already on file. Every job includes a free written estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does slope matter?+

Wrong slope dumps water onto your building or pools it on the walk, which freezes and causes future violations. DOT enforces a strict drainage standard.

Can you fix slope without demo?+

No — slope is set in the pour. Grinding cannot correct an improperly pitched flag.
