Tree Root Damage / Heaved Flag

Street tree roots heave and crack sidewalks. NYC DOT cites the property owner, but Parks owns the tree. We coordinate Parks-approved root pruning, replace the heaved flags, and install root barriers to protect the new pour.

Signs You Have This Violation

  • Visible roots growing under or through the flag
  • Flag tipped up at the tree-pit side
  • Cracks radiating from a tree pit
  • Heaving worse year over year

  3. 3
    Install root barrier

4" 4,000 psi concrete to NYC spec.
